Making space on a small shelf

A small shelf works best when its contents are easy to see and easy to return. Begin by taking everything off and grouping objects by how often they are used. The most useful item deserves the most accessible position, not necessarily the centre.

Leave a little clear space beside each group. This is not a rule about minimalism; it makes the shelf easier to use with one hand. Heavy objects belong on a stable lower level, and the shelf’s fixing and load limit matter more than an attractive arrangement.

Try the layout for a week before buying organisers. Often the simplest improvement is moving one object to the place where it is actually needed.
