What a well-used table teaches

A table carries a record of use in a way that a catalogue photograph cannot. The finish becomes smoother near an edge, a chair leaves a small mark and the place where a cup usually sits begins to look different from the rest. These changes reveal how the object fits into daily life.

When choosing a surface, think about maintenance as well as its first appearance. Can it be wiped easily? Can a small mark be repaired? A material that ages visibly may be more satisfying than one whose coating is difficult to restore.

Good care starts with the maker’s instructions. Test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area and favour a gentle routine over occasional aggressive treatment.
